The Pam Family
Welcome to the Pam family website.
All living members have been excluded from the site.
Although the site is called 'The Pam Family' there are a number of related families. My mother’s maiden name was Maslin who married into the Friswell and Mackness families. The Maslin were rooted in an English artisan class, some of whom emigrated to Australia in the early 19th Century.
On the Pam side related families include Hecht, Lewinsky, Fürth, Gestetner, Popper, Smirzitz, Sachsel, Hochhauser, Browner and Barkan families all of whom have a European Jewish Heritage.
There is anecdotal evidence that ethe family can be traced back to Abraham Pamuseki. He lived in Bohemia, now known as the Czech Republic in the early C18. Many of his descendants migrated from Abtsdorf now called Opatov in the Svitavy District in the Eastern half of the Czech Republic in the 19th Century.
Records suggest that the spelling of the Pam surname changed over time. Variations include Pamuseki and Pahm.
My Great Grandfather Leopold and Great Uncles Julius and Jacob established themselves as successful Diamond Merchants in London and Paris. Great Uncle Moritz settled in Lanskroun where he owned a Paper Mill. His descendants live in Paris, Canada and Australia. A third Great Uncle Philipp's family established themselves in the USA. A forth great uncle - Josef Pam lived in Gablonz in the Czech Republic. Many of his descendants settled in Vienna. This 19th Century generation appear to have been an ambitious and driven and began to travel extensively to establish themselves in successful careers.
During the 1930’s and 1940’s many members of the family died in the Holocaust. Those that survived fled to the USA, Australia, Canada and the UK.
We have begun to piece together what became of our extended family which now numbers over 1000 members.
This website and the gathering of our family history belong to us all. We started to record our family history because much of it disappeared with the passing of our parents generation. Thankfully some of our relatives did leave a written and oral account and with their help we have been able to gather information together about our family for our benefit and for the benefit of those that follow us.
