Theodor with his brother Richard took over the management of their fathers paper spool and bobbin factory. The family conceived the idea of producing spindles for spinning mills made out of cellulose cardboard. This invention made their fortune.
In April 1939 Theodor and his family fled Europe and travelled first to Manchester in April 1939 before emigrating to Montreal in April 1940.
The following account of Theodore Pam's family was written by Liselotte in February 2011.
"By 1938 life in the Sudeten area of Czechoslovakia had become uncomfortable. Theodor [Teddy] decided that a branch of M.Pam & Co should be established in England. He arranged for the necessary specialised machinery to be built and travelled with his wife Marta to England. His daughter, Liselotte, with some expertise in the English language was summoned from Geneva. They settled at the Midland Hotel in Manchester. Agents helped find a location, though too late, the prepared machinery was not allowed to be exported by the Nazis. Chamberlain, negotiating for peace and time, had allowed Hitler to invade the Sudetenland. The Germans walked into Lanskroun on the 8th of September1938. Faithful employees of M.Pam & Co were shot at the gate of the factory. An end to a dream.
Theodor’s sons, Walter and Kurt, were conscripted into the military, though there were no shots fired at the complete takeover of CSR on 15th March1939. Kurt and Johanna were married March 13th. Walter and the young couple spend a few uncomfortable hours in jail, where they were forced to sign all their properties over to the Nazis. They were released and given an exit permit and joined the Family in England.
Hoping to settle in Canada, the Family was able to obtain a visa to move to Montreal in 1940.
Walter, a true entrepreneur, manufactured advertising clocks, a novelty at the time, he moved to New York, later selling the business, married Christiane, and started an import business of fashionable spectacle frames, later manufacturing them in Graz, Austria. He spent his last years in Paris with his wife, Christiane and daughters Sandra and Lilian.
Kurt lived a quiet life in Montreal, bringing up two sons, Thomas and Ronald . Being an avid collector of medals and central European stamps, he was known and highly respected for his knowledge in the field.
Theodor [Teddy] and Marta lived in hope of the war ending and a return to their homeland. Teddy had a fabulous sense of humour, and was admired and loved by all. They died within months of each other in 1944.
Liselotte and Bernard Fisher, married l944, having met skiing. Their passion for skiing dominated their lives, spending vacations in the fashionable resorts of America and Europe. They had three children, Garrick, Marlene and Douglas.
Sadly Bernard suffered a devastating heart attack at the early age of 54 years. We lost Garrick at the age of 34.
He and Pauline had 3 talented sons, Kristopher, Daniel and Gregory.
Marlene, a Child Psychologist, married Philip Stern. They are proud parents of Sarah, Oliver and twins, Emily and Caroline.
Douglas married Elizabeth, both well respected in their profession. They have two children, Andrew and Mathew.
Liselotte, travelled the world, observing, photographing, painting, making much admired jewellery. She plays an acceptable game of bridge, and enjoys life at almost 92."
