William Friswell
William was born in 1794. He was the youngest surviving child of Richard and Mary.
Much of our knowledge of William is taken from a biography written by his granddaughter Laura Hain Friswell on her father – “James Hain Friswell a Memoir” [http://tinyurl.com/3a7pwlx]
We know little about his early life. At the age of 17 he was articled to a firm of solicitors - William Leake of Sackville, St London. He practiced as a solicitor between 1821 and c1840 at 93 Wimpole St Cavendish Sq.
He married Henrietta Hain in c1813 and had 5 children. The marriage appears to have failed prior to 1841. The 1841 census states that he was living with a ‘wife’ Ellen Maria Nursey [or Hursey] at Little Burgh House in Epsom, Surrey. The 1851 census states that he was a Farmer with 140 acres. He may have married Ellen in 1851. Henrietta having died four years earlier.
We do not know why William ceased practicing as a solicitor and took to farming. His granddaughter Laura described him as an ‘upright and honourable man’ but she also described him as ‘extravagant’ having squandered £20k of the £30k left to him by his mother. Laura suggests that he lost money by diversifying into business ventures he knew little about.
William died in 1856 aged sixty-one and was buried in Highgate cemetery.
