Will | 19 Jun 1939 (age 51-52) | |
She left £18,000 in her will. Her brother Edgar was the executor |
My great grandfather, Leopold was the youngest of six children of Samuel Pam and Rosa Bodacher. He was born in a small village Opatov near Lanskroun in Bohemia now the Czech Republic. His father was the Baker and Postmaster in the village.
As a young man he left Opatov for the UK. The first UK record we have is a residence in Forest Hill, Kent when he was 26 years of age. When he was 29 years of age he moved to Brixton, London to the address of Thomas Louis Lowinski. The Pam and Lowinski family became connected through marriage, T.L Lowinski being my Great (x2) grandfather.
He married Philippine Furth on a date prior to 1873. The Furth family were from Prague in the Czech Republic. Philippine’s sister, Helene married Leopold’s older brother, Julius.
Leopold’s occupation was a Diamond merchant, working in central London. One other brother, Jacob, was also in the same business based in Paris.
At the age of 37 he became Naturalised as a British Citizen. At the age of 48 he was granted the Freedom of the City of London. An award to people who have achieved success or recognition in their chosen field.
He and Philippine had six children, including my grandfather, Hugo.
He died aged 71 leaving an estate valued at £28,000. Equivalent to a value of £2m today.
It is impressive that Leopold along with his brother, Jacob made very successful careers having left the Czech Republic as young men, and succeeded in fully integrating into their adopted country, its customs and language.
