Note on Husband: Jacob PAM (2)

My Great Uncle Jacob Pam was born in Opatov near Lanskroun in what was then called Bohemia but now called the Czech Republic.

At the age of thirty he travelled to England. The first address we have is Bloomsbury Square in London in 1865 when he was thirty-five.

When he was forty he became a naturalised UK citizen. At that time his occupation was Diamond merchant.

He married Adele Herczka some time prior to 1875 when their first child, Alice was born.

Jacob lived next door to his younger brother Leopold in Clapham, London. They moved to Paris because Adele found London too damp and foggy.

Jacob’s granddaughter, Jacqueline Propper told me that he suffered from depression after the death of his second daughter, Louise when she was fourteen years of age.

He appeared to have had a very successful career. My father remembers visiting the Pam family outside Paris as a child. They lived in a large Chateau in Versailles

He was buried in a family mausoleum built in Montmartre Cemetery in the Jewish or Israelites section.

Like his younger brother Leopold, It is impressive that he made such a successful careers having left the Czech Republic as a young man. Succeeding in fully integrating into his adopted country, its customs and language.
