Cause: Died suddenly on a hunting trip in Czechoslavakia |
My Great Uncle Moritz Pam was born in Opatov near Lanskroun in Bohemia now the Czech Republic. His date of birth is unknown.
Documents suggests that Moritz was a baker, innkeeper and Brandy distiller in Ostrov, a village a few miles north of Opatov. He later became involved in the Hair trade using hair in the making of braids, nets and wigs. This business went out of fashion in the late C19.
In 1884 he set up a paper spool and bobbin factory serving the flax weaving industry in Lanskroun. It was called M.Pam & Co. The textile industry had relied upon wooden bobbins. The development of cardboard disposable bobbins revolutionised the cotton spool industry. The family lived at 378 Zizkova St, Lanskroun. The business was successful and a second factory was established by his eldest son Samuel in 1890 in Neunkirchen, Austria. In 1925 both Samuel and his brother, Heinrich died and the business was managed by Samuel's son Max. In 1936 the firm employed 200 men.
Moritz first wife, Wilhelmine Manzelka, died in 1868 giving birth to their daughter Rosa.
Moritz had a third son Julius who travelled to South Africa and became a partner in a Diamond Field. He left South Africa penniless following the Boer War.
Moritz married his second wife Wilhelmine Grundmann in 1868. They had two sons, Theodor and Richard. They both became involved in the management and expansion of the business. Opening factories in Dresden and Marburg in Yugoslavia. A factory in Manchester was also planned (1938). By this time Richard had died (1933) and with the rise of the Nazi party in Germany Theodor, his wife and daughter Liselotte left for England en route to Canada later joined by Theodor’s two sons Kurt and Walter. All their factories were confiscated by the Nazi’s. The German firm Siemens taking over the factory in Lanskroun and used for military purposes.
In 1938 Max, Samuel’s son was arrested by the Nazi’s and killed in Dachau Concentration Camp. His wife, Cecilie Ambor and their son Frank Pam left immediately for Australia.

A search for Julius Pam on this website [http://friedhof.ikg-wien.at/search.asp?lang=en] provides a burial date of 1934 aged 71 years. I have estimated his dob as 1863 based on this flimsy evidence. |
